The Pilots

About John

John Baskerville Fulton II, 34, grad student UC Berkeley, Astrophysics.

14,000 hours TT, ATP ASEL ASES AMEL AMES Glider Gyro Helicopter G111

"Misspent youth" is John’s characterization of his unusually extensive flying background. He has flown over 170 types of aircraft and currently skippers a Grumman Albatross for Mr. Reid Dennis who flew that aircraft around the world in 1997.

John first became interested in an around the world flight while making a trip to all 48 states in 1989 in his Aeronca Champ. Subsequent trips throughout Central and South America, Europe and Africa (the last with Doug Cayne in 1997) have really been prelude to this upcoming flight.

About Doug

Douglas A Cayne, 40, bohemian retiree

1,100 hours TT, COMM ASEL AMEL IA

Doug is a fast mover. Shortly after earning his private pilot’s license, he purchased an A-36TC Bonanza and has since flown it to the Carribean, Alaska, Europe, and Africa. He’s accumulated over 1,000 hours in three short years and added a Yak 52 ("a toy plane"), co-owned with John, to the growing fleet last year for aerobatics. Most recently, he added the King Air, Ponceby, which he and John picked up in Munich and flew back to California in their second North Atlantic crossing.

Doug developed wanderlust as a child, inspired by receiving postcards from Ponceby (the plane’s namesake) from all corners of the earth. He’s been travelling the world (by commercial airlines) ever since he was able, both on pleasure and business (in the computer industry from which he retired). He has visited every continent except Antarctica (still on the list), and has been working towards a round-the-world flight ever since starting to fly.
